Mozzelle

PILGRIM MANOR:
this place is on leonard, about 10-12 minutes away. they are extremely accomodating, even posed the possibility of having their residents act (!!!). there are lots of options with the common areas, but the rooms they can offer us are, for the most part, unfurnished. they would require a lot of work to make beleivable.

RAYBROOK MANOR:
this place is right across the street from calvin. they have a fully furnished room for our use, but not as much common areas (although we could explore that more). there are two rooms below, one furnished, one empty. we can use either.

Both places have pluses and minuses that i think we should carefully weigh. there is always the option of combining locations, but we'd want to be diplomatic and fair, as well as stylistically conscious about doing that. everyone post your thoughts!

Hey I am going home to CA this Wednesday and I won't be back till Saturday. I don't know if we had any meetings scheaduled or anything. But I have to attend my best friend from high school's funeral on Thursday because he hung himself a couple days ago. So....Yeah sorry but as far as locations goes, how are we looking on that? Also for the House part...

have we considered Model homes?


They are fully furnished, all access, no one lives there....where are there model homes in Grand Rapids?

im not sure what im replying to, but i am just confirming that wednesdays work for me. if everyone can't go, we can bring a digital camera and take pictures. just curious, which places replied?

Eddy - from what i know - we are not having the casting call today. Im pretty sure that no one except us even knows about our endeavor. we MUST have casting call info out by the end of this week. i can't stress it more. and i don't know what needs to happen to achieve that. someone tell me what to do and i'll do it!

karen and i pulled together 6 possible locations for the nursing home parts. we have calls out to all of those, jordan will be fielding the calls throughout the week, and setting up times to tour the facilities. we talked a bit about house locations. while we don't need to use the same place for INT and EXT, it may make things easier. so keep your eyes and ears open (everyone) for a house that you think may work. some stipulations karen and i came up with.... the house must be:

middle/upper class or old and nice
have a nice kitchen / dining room - preferably with an "island"

but for now, actors are the most important thing. nothing will make this film look more professional than a solid cast.

ps. jordan, for high schoolers, i can still play my connections at my old high school... let me know if you want me to.

Jordan - that sounds like an excellent idea! if you can get that list (and soon i.e. today), i think it would be very valuable.

Eddy - awesome work. i haven't yet read the script revision, but i think putting the biggest script question into writing was a brave, soldieresque, yet uniquely eddy, move. i think you make the best case for option a: having jeremy change his mind. i'm wondering if there is a fourth option, by which we intermix option a and c. what i mean is that there might be a way to not have the story hinge on this question. i would agree that option b trivializes their miscommunication, and lends jeremy too much benevolence. what we have been trying to say throughout this is not that one brother was right all along, but that they have both been unwilling to listen to, and understand each other. the fourth option i suggest would see jeremy making the decision to include martin (even though it isn't a huge sacrifice) and martin interpreting it, for the first time, as a true act of kindness. the ambiguity comes in - i think we should make the point as subtle as possible. there are definitely cinematic ways we can explore this.

Option A: Mozelle and his immediate family, excludes Martin.

Strengths: By not including Martin in the original plan, it creates a stronger turning point for him in the last scene (it’s then that he decides to include him). Having the decision at the end makes this turning point more reactive to Mozelle’s death.

Weaknesses: Doesn’t seem as big of a sacrifice if Jeremy gives Martin a dead woman’s ticket.

Counter-Point: This may be desirable, making the turning point not glamorous. It has the effect that they are pitiful people, but at least they are making a move to reconcile (the first step is a small one). The brothers are pretty depraved, and it could add interest and credibility if Jeremy’s move is tainted still by their past depraved relationship.

Option B: a combo that includes Martin.

Strengths: Maintains an element of surprise (Jeremy had planned this all along). By having Martin included all along shows that Jeremy includes Martin, making Jeremy in final scene more benevolent. The premeditated act of the inclusion focuses more on the brothers’ respective roles. The realization on Martin’s part and acceptance of the ticket illustrates acceptance of Martin’s role somewhat.

Weaknesses: If Jeremy plans before hand to include Martin, it makes this decision a redeeming act in their relationship before Mozelle dies (loose their patheticness). It lessens the effect of their previous argument, because it becomes a matter of Jeremy just not telling Martin beforehand (this seems like a trivial aspect), and therefore there isn’t a very strong turning point in Jeremy. Martin just seems to accept Martin’s role.

Counter-Point: By withholding the information, it ties in with the theme of miscommunication. Maybe more realistic to have them fall into their regular roles hoping that maybe it will just be slightly different this time.

Option C: have it ambiguous.

Strengths: People can have different interpretations, thus provoking dialogue. Don’t have to communicate who exactly is on the itinerary (saves us from an explicit shot of the intinerary that “tells” that audience too much [people have different tastes for this, I personally don’t like this kind of shot, others in the group don’t mind as much]).

Weaknesses: Obscure.

Hey guys. everyone who couldn't make it sunday was missed. hope you are feeling better arlen!

we decided to move the casting calls until after spring break. we are still going to have one this thursday 6-10 (jordan is to set that up). after spring break, we will have a call on tuesday and thursday (both 6-10). let's make sure we have ads out for that THIS WEEK (and early!) eddy has said that everyone is welcome to come to these, that he would really appreciate it.

the script is being reviewed by garcia and eddy is working on the 4th revision. the major questions we need to answer:

1) is the story effective?
2) does it say what we want it to say?
3) is the arc right?

specifics:
1) does jeremy plan on inviting martin on vacation prior to mozzelle's death? why?

I was wondering what steps are being taken to have our casting call next Saturday. Do we have to go out tomorrow to certain locations? Do we have pamflets?

Calvin College students collaborate on the Senior Project to produce an original, professional short film to be shown at festivals. The script is the exploration of two brothers fractured relationship, and how they begin to reconcile through the death of their beloved mother. No previous acting experience is required.

The Characters

Jeremy – the financial provider for Mozzelle, a successful businessman. He shows his love by making sure his family is provided for.

Martin – a high school teacher and loving father, son, and husband. He has lived in Jeremy’s shadow for most of his life. He disagrees with his mother being in a home as he spends the most time with Mozzelle.

Mozzelle – has realized the effectiveness of silence as a communication tool. She is the center of family life, she brings happiness to the whole family.

Natalie – the wife of Martin, a caring and quite woman.

April – the wife of Jeremy, a wonderful mother and loving wife.

Cassie – the daughter of Jeremy and April, she accompanies them to visit Mozzelle and mediates the bad news of her condition from the brothers to their wives.

J.T – the son of Jeremy. He is quiet and reserved, but attentive to the situation

Adam – the son of Martin, he helps Martin beat Jeremy and J.T. in their annual Thanksgiving basketball tournament.
